UK Pre-Master’s Guide for Nepali Students explains how a preparatory postgraduate pathway can build academic English, research and subject skills before a master’s degree, and why progression conditions must be read provider by provider. A Pre-Master’s can bridge a genuine entry gap, but it is not itself a master’s degree and does not always guarantee admission.
Information checked on 24 July 2026. Entry rules, progression grades, fees, course levels, sponsors and Immigration Rules can change, so verify the live offer, course regulations and CAS.

What is a UK Pre-Master’s?
A Pre-Master’s is a preparatory programme for international graduates who want to move into UK postgraduate study but need additional academic English, research, subject knowledge or familiarity with UK assessment.
Programme names, length, award and progression structure vary. Liverpool describes its routes as one-year graduate diplomas, while Oxford Brookes offers pathway options of different lengths and UCL runs a nine-month International Pre-Master’s.
Who may benefit from the pathway?
It may suit a graduate whose degree is not accepted at the direct-entry level, whose subject background needs alignment, whose English is below the master’s condition or who wants structured preparation after time away from study.
A pathway should solve a documented entry gap. Ask the university to assess the exact bachelor’s degree, institution, grades, modules and English evidence for direct master’s admission before adding another course.
A Pre-Master’s is not a master’s degree
The preparatory course normally does not award the intended MA, MSc, MBA or other master’s qualification. It is a separate stage that may lead to admission or progression when its conditions are met.
Check the final award, academic level, credits and whether successful completion appears as a separate qualification. Do not describe pathway enrolment as admission to the completed master’s award.
Pre-Master’s versus pre-sessional English
A pre-sessional course mainly develops English and study skills immediately before an intended degree. A Pre-Master’s can be longer and include research, academic skills and subject-specific modules as a broader postgraduate pathway.
Visa arrangements and progression can differ. The provider should state whether the course is a Pre-Master’s, a pre-sessional English course, or an integrated programme rather than using the labels interchangeably.
Progression models are different
Some university-linked colleges give conditional guaranteed progression to a named master’s degree after the student reaches the required marks and attendance. Liverpool says successful completion at the required level secures a place on the chosen master’s.
Other courses are preparation for a later competitive application. UCL explicitly states that its International Pre-Master’s does not provide automatic progression to a UCL master’s degree. The written offer must identify which model applies.
Read the named destination degree
A pathway can connect only to listed master’s programmes within business, law, science, engineering or other subject groups. Progression to a course with professional, portfolio or technical requirements can need additional evidence.
Confirm the exact degree title, start date, campus, duration and whether the pathway offer reserves a place or simply prepares the student to apply.
Academic entry requirements
Most Pre-Master’s routes expect a completed bachelor’s degree or equivalent higher education, but the minimum grade and accepted subject can vary. Essex describes the route for students with three years of higher education or equivalent who do not yet meet postgraduate entry.
Submit complete transcripts and degree evidence. A provider may evaluate the institution, grading scale, modules, mathematical background or professional experience, not only the final percentage.
Subject alignment
Business, economics, law, computing, engineering and social-science pathways use different subject modules. A general academic-skills course may not supply prerequisites for a technical master’s.
Compare the pathway curriculum with the destination degree’s assumed knowledge. For computing, analytics or engineering, check mathematics, programming and laboratory requirements before accepting.
Academic English and study skills
Pre-Master’s teaching can cover critical reading, source evaluation, academic writing, presentations, seminar participation and discipline-specific vocabulary. These skills prepare students for independent postgraduate work.
The course can still have an English entry threshold and a separate progression score. A low overall score cannot always be offset by stronger academic modules.
Research preparation
Students may study research design, ethics, referencing, literature review, quantitative or qualitative methods and project planning. The depth should match the intended master’s subject.
Ask how research skills are assessed and whether the pathway includes a substantial project. Completion should demonstrate readiness rather than merely attendance.
Course duration and intakes
Pre-Master’s courses can run for a few months, two semesters or a full academic year depending on the entry profile and provider. September and January starts are common, but not every intake leads to every master’s start.
Check that the pathway end date aligns with the named degree and leaves time for progression decisions, a new CAS if needed, accommodation and visa action.
Course level and award
The marketing name does not prove the RQF level. One provider can award a graduate diploma while another uses a different qualification or non-degree preparatory course.
Read the offer, formal course specification and CAS. Course level affects Student route English and work conditions, so it must not be guessed from the word master’s.
English for the Student route
GOV.UK requires CEFR B2 for degree-level or above study and B1 for below-degree study, subject to the accepted evidence route. Universities can set higher course requirements.
A higher education provider can assess English itself for eligible degree-level study, while other cases may require an approved SELT. Use the UK Student visa English guide and follow the CAS assessment.
Licensed sponsor and CAS
A Nepali applicant using the Student route needs an unconditional offer from a licensed sponsor and a valid CAS. The pathway provider, teaching college and destination university may not be the same legal organisation.
Confirm who assigns the CAS, what course and level it records, the dates, fees and whether the later master’s requires a second CAS. The UK CAS guide explains the reconciliation checks.
Student visa course eligibility
GOV.UK permits eligible full-time study below degree level at RQF 3, 4 or 5 with at least 15 hours of organised daytime study, and eligible degree-level or higher courses at RQF 6, 7 or 8.
The licensed sponsor must record the actual pathway correctly. A Pre-Master’s label alone does not establish eligibility or level.
Work rights can vary
Appendix Student allows 20 hours of term-time work for eligible degree-level or above study sponsored by a higher education provider with a track record of compliance. Eligible below-degree study with such a provider can permit 10 hours; other study can permit no work.
Follow the eVisa conditions and the UK part-time work guide. Never budget pathway or master’s tuition from assumed employment.
Dependants are normally not available for the pathway
Current dependant eligibility is narrow and mainly concerns certain postgraduate research programmes or government-sponsored students. A taught preparatory pathway does not normally create eligibility.
Check the live rules before planning family travel. A later taught master’s also does not automatically qualify under the current dependant provisions.
ATAS may matter for the later master’s
Certain postgraduate subjects require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate before the Student visa application. The relevant master’s subject and nationality rules determine the requirement.
Check the destination degree offer and CAH code. Do not apply for ATAS using only the broad Pre-Master’s pathway title; the UK ATAS guide explains the process.
Graduate visa comes after an eligible course
A Pre-Master’s by itself is not normally the qualifying master’s award for the Graduate route. The usual plan is successful progression and completion of the eligible UK master’s or another listed qualification.
GOV.UK currently provides two years for Graduate applications made by 31 December 2026 and 18 months from 1 January 2027, with three years for doctoral graduates. Recheck near completion.
Calculate the total pathway and master’s cost
Add the Pre-Master’s tuition, later degree tuition, deposits, possible fee increases, accommodation, living costs, visa charges, health surcharge and travel. A short pathway can still require several months of additional living funds.
Use the UK study cost guide and compare the full route with direct admission or a different university.
Scholarships and discounts
Some institutions offer progression awards after strong pathway results, but eligibility, amount and later-year coverage vary. Liverpool, for example, publishes a progression scholarship for eligible high-achieving students from its international college.
Treat a scholarship as confirmed only when the written terms identify the amount, course, year and conditions. Do not assume the pathway discount automatically applies to the master’s.
Teaching provider and campus
A partner college may teach the pathway even when the destination degree belongs to the university. Confirm whether students use university facilities, where classes occur and who employs the teaching staff.
Check accommodation, travel and campus changes between stages. A university brand on the offer does not always mean every class is on the main campus.
Progression marks and attendance
Progression can require a named overall average, specific module passes, an English score and good attendance. Competitive degrees can set higher marks than the general pathway pass.
Record the exact conditions from the offer rather than relying on a sales summary. Ask what happens if one module or English component is missed.
What if progression is not achieved?
Options can include reassessment, repeat study, an alternative degree, a later application or exit. Availability and cost vary, and extra time can affect sponsorship.
Read the regulations, refund policy and appeal process before enrolment. There is no universal right to repeat or transfer to another university.
Compare direct master’s entry
A different university may accept the student’s bachelor’s degree directly, or a stronger English result, relevant experience or missing prerequisite could remove the need for a pathway.
Compare academic fit, total cost, time, progression risk and destination degree quality. The best route is the one that closes a real gap with transparent conditions.
Pre-Master’s warning signs
- Calling the pathway itself a completed master’s degree
- Promising automatic progression without written academic conditions
- Hiding the teaching provider, sponsor or campus
- Claiming every pathway carries 20-hour work rights
- Quoting only the pathway fee as the complete study cost
- Promising automatic dependants or Graduate visa eligibility
- Requesting payment before naming the destination degree
Step-by-step Pre-Master’s checklist
- Request direct-entry assessment. Use the complete bachelor’s record.
- Name the destination degree. Confirm whether a place is reserved.
- Read progression rules. Record marks, English and attendance conditions.
- Check subject modules. Match them to the intended master’s.
- Verify delivery. Confirm sponsor, provider, campus and award.
- Check the CAS plan. Understand whether another CAS is needed.
- Calculate both stages. Include all tuition and living costs.
- Read visa conditions. Use the actual course level and eVisa.
- Understand non-progression. Check reassessment, appeal and refund terms.
Common Pre-Master’s mistakes
- Assuming the course is a master’s degree
- Confusing it with a short pre-sessional English course
- Ignoring whether progression is guaranteed or competitive
- Choosing a pathway unrelated to the destination subject
- Guessing the RQF level from the course name
- Budgeting only the preparatory stage
- Assuming scholarships cover the later master’s
- Assuming work or dependant rights
- Overlooking a second CAS or campus change
Frequently asked questions
Is a UK Pre-Master’s a master’s degree?
No. It is a preparatory course designed to develop academic, English, research or subject skills before a later master’s programme.
Does every Pre-Master’s guarantee progression?
No. Some linked pathways provide conditional guaranteed progression, while others prepare students for a separate application. The written offer and course rules decide.
Do I need a bachelor’s degree first?
Usually a completed bachelor’s degree or equivalent higher education is expected, but grades, subject alignment and accepted qualifications vary by provider.
Can a Pre-Master’s student work 20 hours a week?
Do not assume so. Work conditions depend on the CAS course level, sponsor type and eVisa. Eligible courses can carry 20 hours, 10 hours or no work.
Does a Pre-Master’s qualify for the Graduate visa?
The pathway alone is not normally the qualifying master’s award. Eligibility usually depends on completing the later eligible UK postgraduate degree and meeting the live rules.
