USA F1 Reduced Course Load Guide for Nepali Students

USA F1 Reduced Course Load Guide for Nepali Students explains when a DSO may approve study below the normal full-course requirement for specified academic difficulties, a documented medical condition or the final term, and why approval must be recorded in SEVIS before the student drops a class. Academic adviser or professor permission alone does not protect F-1 status.

Information checked on 24 July 2026 using current DHS and SEVIS guidance. Schools apply their own academic procedures alongside federal rules, so obtain written DSO authorisation before changing enrolment.

Start with the full-course requirement

F-1 status normally requires a full course of study during each required academic term. The exact credit or clock-hour definition depends on the education level and school calendar.

Review the international office’s full-time definition before registration and before any withdrawal, incomplete or course-format change.

Never drop first and ask later

DHS rules state that a student who drops below a full course without prior DSO approval is considered out of status. A registrar system allowing the drop does not make it immigration-compliant.

Wait for written confirmation that the DSO entered the RCL in SEVIS, then follow the approved academic action.

Know the three main RCL categories

The principal categories are specified academic difficulties, a temporary illness or medical condition, and the final term when fewer courses are needed to complete the program.

Each category has different evidence, minimum enrolment and time limits. Do not use a final-term reason to cover health or academic difficulty.

Use academic-difficulty RCL narrowly

Academic-difficulty RCL can address initial difficulty with English or reading requirements, unfamiliarity with United States teaching methods or improper course-level placement under the regulatory standard.

General low grades, time management, employment or preference for a lighter schedule are not automatically qualifying reasons.

Observe the academic RCL credit floor

An academic-difficulty RCL generally requires at least six semester or quarter hours, or at least half the clock hours normally required for a full course.

The DSO and academic adviser should identify which course will be dropped and how the student will remain academically engaged.

Remember academic RCL is limited

Academic-difficulty RCL is normally limited to one term at a particular program level. The student must be ready to resume a full course in the next required term.

Repeated difficulty may require tutoring, academic support or another lawful plan rather than another academic RCL.

Document a medical RCL correctly

A medical RCL requires documentation from a licensed medical doctor, doctor of osteopathy or licensed clinical psychologist under the applicable rule.

The evidence should support the need for a reduced or zero course load for a defined period. Follow the school’s secure submission process and provide only necessary health information.

Understand medical RCL duration

Medical RCL can be authorised for periods based on updated evidence, with an aggregate maximum generally tied to 12 months at a program level.

Track every authorised period. A prior medical term can reduce the time available for a later condition at the same level.

Renew medical approval before it expires

If the condition continues, submit updated medical documentation and obtain a new DSO authorisation before the existing period ends.

A doctor’s original note does not create an indefinite immigration permission.

Use final-term RCL only to finish

In the final term, a DSO may authorise fewer than full-time credits when the student needs only those remaining requirements to complete the program.

Register for every course or requirement needed for completion. A final-term RCL is not a vacation term.

Keep an in-person academic component when required

Online and distance-learning limits still matter. A final term built entirely around an online class can create a problem unless the student’s thesis, dissertation or other situation fits current guidance.

Ask the DSO to review delivery mode before registration changes.

Handle thesis and dissertation enrolment

Graduate students working on a thesis or dissertation may be considered full-time under the school’s certified academic structure even with a low numerical credit count.

Do not assume that research status and RCL are the same. Obtain the school’s specific SEVIS treatment in writing.

Collect academic evidence

Use adviser statements, placement records, degree audits and course schedules to show the qualifying issue and proposed solution.

The evidence should identify dates and requirements rather than merely recommend a lighter workload.

Review the SEVIS and Form I-20 record

The DSO records the RCL reason, dates and authorisation in SEVIS. Ask whether an updated Form I-20 will be issued and keep it with the approval.

Verify that the category matches the supporting evidence and that the authorised term is correct.

Continue address and reporting duties

An authorised RCL maintains F-1 status only while the student follows the other status requirements. Keep address, contact and school records current.

Tell the DSO if the academic or medical situation changes before the authorised period ends.

Check employment separately

An RCL does not create new employment permission or expand work hours. On-campus, CPT, OPT and hardship employment each have separate rules.

A medical leave can also affect practical ability to work, so coordinate with the DSO and employer.

Protect future CPT and OPT plans

An authorised RCL can preserve status, but practical-training eligibility depends on the full record and academic-year requirements.

Ask the DSO how the reduced term affects any planned CPT or OPT before accepting employment.

Extend the program date separately when needed

If reduced study delays completion beyond the Form I-20 end date, request a program extension before that date. RCL approval alone does not move the end date.

Provide a revised academic plan and funding evidence for the extra period.

Return to full-time study on schedule

After an academic or medical RCL ends, register for a full course in the next required term unless a new, valid authorisation applies.

Confirm the return with the DSO and resolve holds early enough to enrol.

Act quickly after an unauthorised drop

If a class was dropped before approval, contact the DSO immediately. Do not alter dates or ask a professor to backdate a letter.

The record may require reinstatement or another status strategy. The solution depends on the exact facts.

RCL warning signs

  • A professor approves the drop but the DSO does not
  • The student withdraws before SEVIS authorisation
  • Academic RCL is requested for ordinary poor performance
  • Medical evidence comes from an ineligible or unclear source
  • An old medical approval is reused without renewal
  • Final-term enrolment omits a required completion course
  • The program end date passes without a separate extension

Reduced course load workflow

  1. Check full-time status. Calculate the planned credits and delivery modes.
  2. Meet the DSO. Identify the correct RCL category before dropping.
  3. Collect evidence. Obtain academic or qualified medical documentation.
  4. Wait for approval. Confirm the SEVIS authorisation in writing.
  5. Change enrolment. Drop only what the approval permits.
  6. Track dates. Renew medical approval or resume full-time study.
  7. Protect completion. Extend the program separately if required.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drop a class before meeting the DSO?

No. Dropping below a full course without prior DSO approval can violate F-1 status.

What academic difficulties can qualify?

The rule identifies initial English or reading difficulty, unfamiliarity with United States teaching methods and improper course-level placement.

Can a medical RCL allow zero credits?

It can when properly supported and authorised for the medical condition under the applicable rule.

How long can medical RCL last?

Authorised periods can total up to the applicable 12-month aggregate limit at a program level.

Does RCL extend the Form I-20 end date?

No. A separate program extension must be approved before the current end date when more time is needed.
