Define the diagnostic purpose
A baseline diagnostic identifies the starting point before a study plan. A midpoint test measures whether methods are working, while a readiness test checks pacing and stability near the appointment.
Use a different decision for each. The baseline builds priorities; the final diagnostic should not reopen the entire syllabus.
Confirm that the GRE is relevant
Check whether each intended program requires, accepts or does not use GRE scores. Record deadlines and three-measure context.
A diagnostic is useful only when connected to an application decision or a deliberate skills goal.
Use the current test structure
The standard computer-delivered General Test lasts about 1 hour 58 minutes with five sections. Analytical Writing is first, followed by two Verbal and two Quantitative sections.
Old tests with two essays, 20-question sections or a separate experimental section do not reproduce current pacing.
Use exact section timing
Use 30 minutes for the Issue task, 18 and 23 minutes for the 12- and 15-question Verbal sections, and 21 and 26 minutes for the 12- and 15-question Quantitative sections.
Do not combine all Verbal or Quantitative time into one flexible block because section deadlines matter.
Choose an official practice experience
ETS POWERPREP is designed to familiarise candidates with current question types, tools, navigation, timing and scoring. Use an official current-format test when possible.
Save enough official material for later readiness checks. An early diagnostic has value only when it is deeply reviewed.
Understand the POWERPREP tools
Official practice can reproduce moving within a section, changing answers, mark-and-review and the on-screen calculator. These behaviours affect pacing as well as content performance.
Learn the interface before the scored baseline so navigation confusion is not mistaken for a reasoning gap.
Prepare realistic conditions
Choose a quiet block, remove notifications and tell others not to interrupt. Use the intended appointment time where practical.
At home, a practice room need not be proctored, but reproducing the desk, screen and household conditions can expose risk.
Use only permitted-style materials
At a centre, candidates receive scratch paper; at home, ETS uses erasable whiteboard or transparent-sleeve options. Match the intended delivery mode during late diagnostics.
Do not use formula notes, dictionaries, a phone or external calculator during the timed baseline.
Do not pause the timed sections
The current test has no scheduled break, and ETS warns that unscheduled timing does not stop. A diagnostic should reproduce continuous execution unless approved accommodations apply.
If a genuine interruption occurs, record it and avoid treating the score as directly comparable.
Record more than the score
For each section, capture answered count, correct count where available, marked questions, rushed guesses, time remaining and concentration. Record confidence before checking answers.
A score alone cannot reveal whether improvement requires concepts, reading, timing or test conditions.
Create the error-log fields
Use source, measure, question type, concept, time, confidence, selected answer, correct reasoning, error cause and revisit date. Include slow correct and lucky correct answers.
Keep the original reasoning in the log; replacing it with only the official explanation hides the cause.
Classify concept gaps
A concept gap means the tested mathematics, word meaning, sentence logic or reading principle was not known well enough. Assign a short lesson and untimed practice.
Do not try to fix missing foundations with faster timing alone.
Classify interpretation gaps
Interpretation errors include missing a condition, reversing a comparison, using outside passage knowledge or misunderstanding the required response format.
Rewrite the question in plain language and identify the exact phrase that should have controlled the answer.
Classify execution gaps
Setup, calculation, copying, unit, sign and answer-entry mistakes occur after the concept is understood. Add a specific checking habit rather than labelling all of them careless.
For example, write the requested unit beside the answer box or estimate before calculator use.
Classify timing gaps
A timing error can be spending too long on one item, reading without a purpose, reopening completed work or delaying a guess until the timer ends.
Use section checkpoints and a mark-and-move rule in later practice.
Analyse Verbal by question family
Separate Reading Comprehension, Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence. Within reading, note main idea, inference, function, evidence and multiple-selection performance.
Within completion questions, distinguish vocabulary from failure to see contrast, support or tone.
Analyse Quantitative by domain
Separate arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis, then add question format: Quantitative Comparison, single or multiple choice, Numeric Entry and Data Interpretation.
A domain can be strong in direct questions but weak in word-problem modelling, so keep both labels.
Analyse calculator decisions
Record unnecessary calculator use, input errors and cases where estimation would have exposed an unreasonable answer. Also note arithmetic where the tool saved time correctly.
The objective is a reliable decision rule, not avoiding or using the calculator in every case.
Assess the Issue response
Use the current official task directions and score descriptions. Review whether the essay answered the exact instruction, stated a position, developed reasons and examples, addressed complexity and remained organised.
Check whether time was reserved for revision and whether sentence errors disrupted clarity.
Do not self-score writing by length
ETS uses holistic evaluation of the response’s overall quality. A long essay can remain weak if it is off-task or poorly supported.
Use official sample commentary and, where possible, trained feedback to estimate the main improvement priorities.
Interpret practice scores cautiously
Official practice provides useful estimates, but one simulation is not a guaranteed future score. Test-day form, concentration and ordinary measurement variation matter.
Use a range and pattern across checkpoints, not a single emotional high or low.
Set priorities by value
Rank weaknesses by program importance, size of gap, frequency and likelihood of improvement in the available time. Choose a small first set.
A rare difficult question should not displace a repeated foundation error that affects many items.
Build the weekly study mix
Assign concept review, focused untimed practice, timed application, error review, vocabulary, reading and Issue writing. Keep all measures active.
Schedule delayed re-solves so explanations become retained skills.
Choose the next diagnostic date
Allow enough teaching and practice for the result to change. A full test every few days can consume questions without creating improvement.
Use shorter section checks between full simulations.
Compare like with like
Compare timed current-format tests taken under similar conditions. Do not compare an untimed drill percentage directly with a full adaptive simulation score.
Keep source, timing and accommodations beside every result.
Use approved accommodation settings

Do not use extended time casually and then compare it with standard-time results.
