UK Pre-Departure Checklist for Nepali Students covers eVisa checks, travel documents, flights, accommodation, money, medicines, customs, insurance, university arrival and the first essential tasks after landing. Travel only after the visa is approved and every passport, UKVI account and permission detail is correct.
Information checked on 24 July 2026. Travel, eVisa, customs and health rules can change, so confirm GOV.UK, airline, transit-country and university instructions shortly before departure.

Do not travel before approval
GOV.UK says you must not travel to the UK before the visa application is approved. After approval, sign in to the UKVI account and check the permission start and end dates. Book travel within the authorised period and follow the university’s latest-arrival requirement.
A paid tuition deposit, CAS or biometrics appointment is not permission to travel. Wait for the formal decision and accessible immigration status. Avoid a non-refundable ticket when the decision is still pending.
Applicants who need the full immigration sequence can review the UK Student visa requirements and document guide.
Check the eVisa and UKVI account
The UK has moved to digital immigration status. GOV.UK states that UKVI stopped issuing visa vignette stickers to successful new applicants from 1 July 2026, although a person issued a form for accompanying an eVisa may need to collect it as instructed.
Before travel, confirm that the UKVI account displays the correct name, date of birth, nationality, immigration route, validity dates and conditions. Make sure the passport you will carry is linked to the account. Report an error through the official eVisa service before departure.
The airline normally checks permission electronically, but a carrier may ask for additional evidence when automatic verification fails. Keep the decision email and instructions accessible without relying on airport Wi-Fi.
Passport and transit checks
Use the same valid passport linked to the eVisa. If a passport changes, update the UKVI account and check whether any other travel step is required. The name on the airline booking should match the travel document.
A connecting country may require a transit visa even when the UK visa is valid. Check the official government and airline transit rules for every airport and whether baggage must be collected and rechecked. Do not rely only on a travel-agent message.
Documents to keep in hand luggage
- Current passport and any accompanying travel document
- Visa decision and eVisa access information
- University offer, CAS details and enrolment instructions
- Tuition and accommodation payment receipts
- Verified UK accommodation address and contact
- Recent financial evidence used for the visa
- TB certificate and ATAS certificate where applicable
- Academic originals requested for enrolment
- Travel insurance and emergency contact information
- Prescription or clinician letter for necessary medicine
Store encrypted digital copies separately, but keep documents that may be requested at the border available without opening checked baggage. Do not hand original credentials to an unknown representative.
Be ready for border questions
A Border Force officer can ask about the university, course, start date, accommodation, funding and travel plan. Answer briefly and truthfully using the same facts as the application. Know the exact university and campus rather than memorising a generic speech.
An eVisa allows the carrier and border to check permission, but it does not remove the need to satisfy entry requirements. Keep the university’s arrival or out-of-hours contact available if a genuine course question arises.
Confirm university arrival and enrolment
Read the international-arrival instructions, enrolment deadline and document list. Book any airport pickup only through a verified university or provider channel. Tell the university promptly if a flight disruption risks missing the latest arrival date.
Some institutions require online pre-enrolment before travel and an in-person identity check after arrival. Complete both stages by the stated deadlines. Missing enrolment can affect teaching access and sponsor reporting.
The UK university intake guide explains how these final steps fit the wider timeline.
Finalise accommodation
Confirm the complete address, room type, check-in date, key collection, deposit, balance and cancellation terms. Calculate the journey from the arrival airport to the property, including late-night transport and luggage.
If permanent housing begins later, book legitimate temporary accommodation and tell the university where you can be reached. Never travel with only an unverified social-media listing or an instruction to pay cash after landing.
Use the UK student accommodation guide for contracts, deposits, bills and scam checks.
Plan airport-to-accommodation travel
Write down the route, operator, last service and backup option. A distance that looks short on a map can involve several changes. Check whether a rail or coach ticket is tied to one departure and what happens after a delayed flight.
Share the flight and arrival plan with a trusted person, not publicly. Use licensed transport and verify a pickup driver’s identity. Keep the first-night address in both English text and map form.
Money, cards and tuition payments
Carry enough accessible money for transport, food, phone service and a short emergency, but avoid carrying the whole study budget in cash. Tell the Nepal bank about travel, verify international card limits and keep a backup payment method separately.
Pay tuition and accommodation only through verified university or provider channels. If bank details change, confirm them using contact information already known to be genuine. Reject requests to transfer money through a stranger’s account after arrival.
Cash declaration rules
GOV.UK requires a declaration when a person carries £10,000 or more in cash between Great Britain and a country outside the UK. A family or group carrying that amount in total must still declare it even when each person holds less.
Northern Ireland has separate rules and uses a €10,000 threshold in relevant journeys. The definition of cash includes more than banknotes in some cases. Use the official declaration service, available up to 72 hours before travel, when the rule applies.
Medicines and medical preparation
Ask the prescriber whether any medicine contains a controlled drug. GOV.UK says a non-UK resident normally carries no more than a three-month supply personally, with a letter showing the name, travel dates, medicine, quantity, dose, strength and prescriber’s signature.
Carry the medicine in hand luggage and original labelled packaging. Schedule 1 controlled drugs cannot normally enter without a licence. Do not arrange for controlled medicine to be posted later; consult a UK clinician before the supply ends.
Bring a concise medical summary, vaccination history, spare glasses and essential prescriptions. The UK student healthcare and NHS guide explains GP registration and ongoing care.
Food and customs restrictions
Great Britain restricts food, animal products, plants and seeds brought from Nepal. GOV.UK says travellers from countries outside the EU cannot bring meat, meat products, milk or milk-based products, apart from narrow exceptions such as qualifying infant or medical food.
Most fresh fruit and vegetables require a phytosanitary certificate, although named exceptions and processed products can be allowed. Northern Ireland uses different rules. Check each product shortly before packing and declare goods when required rather than risking seizure or a penalty.
Luggage and weather preparation
Read the airline’s cabin and checked baggage rules for every flight segment. Weigh luggage before leaving home and keep irreplaceable documents, medicine, electronics and one change of clothes in hand luggage.
Pack layers and a waterproof outer layer rather than filling luggage with bulky items available in the UK. Check voltage and plug compatibility. Do not carry dangerous batteries, liquids or sharp items contrary to aviation rules.
Phone, internet and account security
Arrange a short-term roaming or arrival connection so you can contact accommodation and family. Compare UK mobile plans after checking coverage at the campus and address; do not sign a long contract under airport pressure.
Enable two-factor authentication for email, bank, university and UKVI accounts. Keep backup codes securely offline. Immigration, university and banking scams often begin with urgent messages demanding a transfer or login.
Travel and health insurance
The Immigration Health Surcharge gives access to covered NHS care from the immigration permission start date, but it does not cover flight disruption, luggage, repatriation or all private and dental treatment. Travel insurance can address those gaps according to its terms.
Declare pre-existing conditions and read the excess, exclusions and coverage dates. Ensure the policy begins before leaving Nepal and covers any transit country.
Academic preparation
Download the reading list, timetable instructions and university apps where available. Carry academic originals only when the institution asks for them. Back up important coursework, portfolio and research files.
Check whether the course needs a laptop specification, laboratory clothing, calculator or specialist software. Compare UK prices before buying expensive equipment in Nepal that may not meet the course standard.
Know Student work restrictions
Part-time work rights depend on the course, sponsor and eVisa condition. A degree-level Student at an eligible provider may commonly receive a 20-hour term-time limit, but not every Student can work.
Do not accept freelance, business or cash work before checking the rules. The UK part-time work rules guide explains term dates, prohibited activities and record keeping.
